This fifth Carry On is unique in the series in that it does not have a single storyline, but consists of a loose collection of sketches. The action centres around Sid James and his "Helping Hands" employment agency, which tackles the oddest of jobs. The assignments vary in comic value, but the ones in which Joan Sims gets hammered at a snooty wine tasting and Kenneth Williams baby-sits a frisky chimpanzee stand out. The inimitable Esma Cannon simpers and sniggers superbly as Sid's assistant, but regulars Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor have little to do, and the gobbledegooking of Stanley Unwin is an irritating intrusion. | Director: Gerald Thomas Cast List: Bert Handy : Sidney James Sam Twist : Kenneth Connor Francis Courtenay : Kenneth Williams Gabriel Dimple : Charles Hawtrey Lily Duveen : Joan Sims Delia King : Liz Fraser Mike Weston : Bill Owen Frosty-faced Sister : Hattie Jacques Montgomery Infield-Hopping : Terence Longdon Matron : Joan Hickson Miss Cooling : Esma Cannon |

The title could well refer to the two stars, both, alas, well past their sell-by dates, in this undistinguished but nevertheless beautifully photographed (by veteran cameraman William Clothier) western. Toupeed, paunchy John Wayne plays a Union colonel on his way to Mexico who confronts mustachioed Rock Hudson - shades of McMillan and Wife - as a Confederate colonel, but the theme of post-Civil War reconciliation ensures that no sparks fly between the two leads. There's no real chemistry either, deepening the suspicion that Wayne and Hudson had little in common, either on or off screen. Director Andrew V McLaglen seems to have had problems locating the right tone for this tale, but US football fans might relish the casting of gridiron stars Roman Gabriel and Merlin Olsen, while lovers of the genre might recall the glory days of those members of John Ford's repertory company present here: Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and John Agar. | Director: Andrew V McLaglen Cast List: Colonel John Henry Thomas : John Wayne Colonel James Langdon : Rock Hudson General Rojas : Tony Aguilar Blue Boy : Roman Gabriel Ann Langdon : Marian McCargo Margaret Langdon : Lee Meriwether Big George : Merlin Olsen Charlotte Langdon : Melissa Newman Jeff Newby : Bruce Cabot Bubba Wilkes : Michael Vincent Short Grub : Ben Johnson Anderson : Edward Faulkner Webster : Harry Carey Jr Major Sanders : Royal Dano Dan Morse : Richard Mulligan General Joe Masters : Paul Fix Christian : John Agar |

This third big-screen outing for Jim Henson's puppets has playwright Kermit frog-marching his pals to New York to stage his college show on Broadway. Alas, he finds that biting the Big Apple can leave a sour taste in the mouth. It's not quite up to the standard of the two earlier outings, The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper, but the bouncy songs and clever use of Manhattan locations are bonuses. Muppet movies always feature a vast array of guest stars: watch out here for cameos from Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, Joan Rivers and Gregory Hines, among others. | Director: Frank Oz Cast List: Kermit the Frog / Rowlf / Dr Teeth / Ernie / Muppet newsman / S : Jim Henson Miss Piggy / Fozzie Bear / Animal / Sam the Eagle / Bert / Cook : Frank Oz Gonzo / Chester Rat / Bill the Frog / Dr Bunsen Honeydew / Zoot : Dave Goelz Rizzo the Rat / Gil the Frog : Steve Whitmire Scooter / Statler / Janice / Sweetums / Beaker : Richard Hunt Floyd Pepper / Camilla / Pops / Crazy Harry / Lew Zealand : Jerry Nelson Jenny : Juliana Donald Ronnie : Lonny Price Pete : Louis Zorich Art Carney : Art Carney James Coco : James Coco Dabney Coleman : Dabney Coleman Elliott Gould : Elliott Gould Gregory Hines : Gregory Hines Linda Lavin : Linda Lavin Liza Minnelli : Liza Minnelli Joan Rivers : Joan Rivers Brooke Shields : Brooke Shields John Landis : John Landis |

In this typically polished whodunnit, adapted by Anthony Shaffer (who wrote Sleuth) from the Agatha Christie novel, Peter Ustinov makes his second appearance as fussy Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. You won't use up too many grey cells figuring out who is responsible for the murder of actress Diana Rigg, but there's enormous pleasure to be had from sitting through the picture while waiting to be proved right. The stellar cast clearly enjoys itself, with Maggie Smith in fine fettle as the hotel manageress. The franchise holders took a real risk by handing this third Harry Potter film to a Mexican director who's best known for the smart, sexy but low-budget road movie Y Tu Mamá También and, more telling, the Oscar-nominated A Little Princess. But the decision has paid dividends. Alfonso Cuarón brings a darker, edgier, scarier feel to this instalment, which has boy wizard Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) contending not only with Gary Oldman's escaped convict, but also with the difficulties of becoming a teenager. But there's still plenty of fun to be had, with ghosts, ghouls and gadgets galore, the most striking gizmo being a shape-shifting triple-decker bus that, were it real, would solve London's traffic congestion at a stroke. David Thewlis, Emma Thompson and Timothy Spall join the list of cameoing celebrities, while the young leads are all growing into their roles. The film has the odd dull patch, and there are scenes weighed down by too much plot, but, by and large, this adventure is on a par with its predecessors, and, in many respects, is even better. Potter fans will not be disappointed. | Director: Alfonso Cuaron Cast List: Harry Potter : Daniel Radcliffe Ron Weasley : Rupert Grint Hermione Granger : Emma Watson Prof Albus Dumbledore : Michael Gambon Prof Minerva McGonagall : Maggie Smith Rubeus Hagrid : Robbie Coltrane Prof Severus Snape : Alan Rickman Prof Lupin : David Thewlis Prof Sybill Trelawney : Emma Thompson Sirius Black : Gary Oldman Mrs Molly Weasley : Julie Walters Mr Arthur Weasley : Mark Williams James Potter : Adrian Rawlins Lily Potter : Geraldine Somerville Uncle Vernon : Richard Griffiths Aunt Marge : Pam Ferris Aunt Petunia : Fiona Shaw Argus Filch : David Bradley (2) Fat lady in painting : Dawn French Draco Malfoy : Tom Felton Madame Rosmerta : Julie Christie Cornelius Fudge : Robert Hardy Peter Pettigrew : Timothy Spall Sir Cadogan : Paul Whitehouse Shrunken head : Lenny Henry |

The fourth Shrek movie, and the first in 3D, has the not-so-jolly green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers), Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and their three icky, burping babies living in apparent familial bliss. So far, so dull. But as this descends into domestic routine, a darker hue is revealed: Shrek makes a deal with trickster Rumpelstiltskin to return him to his villager-scaring roots for one day. However, the small print in the contract wipes out the status quo and a dystopian, It's a Wonderful Life-style alternative universe is the cleverly conceived result, with ogres as slaves and witches filling the skies. Alongside nods to King Kong and the Ewok revolt from Return of the Jedi, the story weaves notably grown-up themes of responsibility and regret, and a mangy Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and gone-to-seed Puss (Antonio Banderas) shoulder all the laughs. It's a neat enough way of closing the book - and one hopes it is closed now. | Director: Mike Mitchell Cast List: Shrek : Mike Myers Donkey : Eddie Murphy Princess Fiona : Cameron Diaz Puss-in-Boots : Antonio Banderas Queen : Julie Andrews King Harold : John Cleese Rumpelstiltskin / Priest / Krekraw ogre : Walter Dohrn Brogan : Jon Hamm Gretched : Jane Lynch Cookie : Craig Robinson Doris the Ugly Stepsister : Larry King Dancing witch / Wagon witch : Kathy Griffin Guard witch : Mary Kay Place |

As the title suggests, this insipid romantic comedy will prove adept at driving away men - in just a matter of minutes - and its female audience may well follow. Kate Hudson's journalist is assigned a magazine feature for which she must snare a guy and then make him dump her, while her target, Matthew McConaughey, is involved in a bet to make a woman fall in love with him - and both have ten days to do it in. Despite the odd mildly amusing observation on the mating rituals of New Yorkers and some pretty cinematography, the contrived plot and leaden supporting cast smother any vestige of the light, fizzy wit that's essential for this kind of film. Matters aren't helped by Hudson and McConaughey, who, while undoubtedly an attractive couple, lack the chemistry needed to give this fallen soufflé of a movie the sexy lift it so badly needs. | Director: Donald Petrie Cast List: Andie Anderson : Kate Hudson Benjamin Barry : Matthew McConaughey Tony : Adam Goldberg Spears : Michael Michele Green : Shalom Harlow Lana Jong : Bebe Neuwirth Phillip Warren : Robert Klein Michelle : Kathryn Hahn |

This is the kind of brisk, bright and thoroughly engaging comedy thriller that the British film industry has, sadly, forgotten how to make. But, then again, there are no more Alastair Sims to transform a passage of jovial banter into a moment of nail-biting suspense simply by slowing that melancholy Scottish accent and lowering those expressive oyster eyes. Gone, too, are such expert character actors as Leo Genn, whose ability to portray heroes and villains alike deepened the mystery in whodunnits such as this one, in which a patient is murdered on the operating table. Sidney Gilliat directs with a deliciously dark wit. | Director: Sidney Gilliat Cast List: Inspector Cockrill : Alastair Sim Nurse Linley : Sally Gray Dr Barney Barnes : Trevor Howard Nurse Esther Sanson : Rosamund John Mr Eden : Leo Genn Sister Marion Bates : Judy Campbell Nurse Woods : Megs Jenkins Joe Higgins : Moore Marriott Mr Purdy : Henry Edwards Dr White : Ronald Adam Sergeant Hendricks : George Woodbridge |

This delightful follow-up to The Addams Family is blessed with an even blacker vein of humour than the original. Gomez and Morticia (Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston) have a new baby, much to the displeasure of their other children (Christina Ricci and Jimmy Workman), while Fester has fallen under the spell of the youngster's scheming black widow nanny (Joan Cusack). Once again, the playing is faultless, but it is Ricci who effortlessly steals the show, whether trying to bump off her new sibling or creating havoc at an all-American summer camp. The sets are wonderful, the cinematography exquisite and Barry Sonnenfeld's direction is exhilarating. The perfect antidote to more traditional, sentimental family fare. | Director: Barry Sonnenfeld Cast List: Morticia Addams : Anjelica Huston Gomez Addams : Raul Julia Uncle Fester : Christopher Lloyd Debbie Jellinsky : Joan Cusack Wednesday Addams : Christina Ricci Granny : Carol Kane Pugsley Addams : Jimmy Workman Pubert Addams : Kristin Hooper Lurch : Carel Struycken Joel Glicker : David Krumholtz Thing : Christopher Hart Margaret : Dana Ivey Gary Granger : Peter MacNicol Becky Granger : Christine Baranski Amanda Buckman : Mercedes McNab Don Buckman : Sam McMurray Ellen Buckman : Harriet Sansom Harris Mrs Glicker : Julie Halston Mr Glicker : Barry Sonnenfeld Pubert Addams : Kaitlyn Hooper |

The magic is still there but the mood remains resolutely dark in this engrossing fifth episode in the fantasy franchise. With no Quidditch matches or tournaments to divert him, the task facing Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is to convince the wizarding community of the re-emergence of Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). His cause isn't helped when Dumbledore's position as Head of Hogwarts comes under threat. Adapting JK Rowling's bumper-size book was always going to be a challenge, and it's therefore surprising that David Yates's film is the shortest to date. Less may not necessarily be more, however, as some characters are given short shrift and subplots are sketched over. That said, Yates instils proceedings with the requisite sense of wonder, Alan Rickman is deliciously dour as Snape and Rupert Grint's Ron injects some much needed light relief, while Imelda Staunton steals the show as prim but poisonous tutor Dolores Umbridge. In a spellbinding finale set in the Ministry of Magic, we finally see the forces of good and evil engaging in full-on combat, and it's well worth the wait. | Director: David Yates Cast List: Harry Potter : Daniel Radcliffe Ron Weasley : Rupert Grint Hermione Granger : Emma Watson Sirius Black : Gary Oldman Prof Albus Dumbledore : Michael Gambon Lord Voldemort : Ralph Fiennes Dolores Umbridge : Imelda Staunton Prof Severus Snape : Alan Rickman Luna Lovegood : Evanna Lynch Cho Chang : Katie Leung Bellatrix Lestrange : Helena Bonham Carter Rubeus Hagrid : Robbie Coltrane Mrs Molly Weasley : Julie Walters Mr Arthur Weasley : Mark Williams Prof Sybill Trelawney : Emma Thompson Prof Minerva McGonagall : Maggie Smith Remus Lupin : David Thewlis Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody : Brendan Gleeson Cornelius Fudge : Robert Hardy Lucius Malfoy : Jason Isaacs Draco Malfoy : Tom Felton Argus Filch : David Bradley (2) Filius Flitwick : Warwick Davis Uncle Vernon : Richard Griffiths Aunt Petunia : Fiona Shaw |

Action man Jason Statham shows a softer side here, in the disjointed and poorly scripted third entry in his signature high-flying franchise. As moody driver Frank Martin he's forced to drive kidnapped "package" Valentina (Natalya Rudakova) around Europe until her father, the Ukrainian environmental minister, signs a crooked toxic waste agreement. The eco-villains will kill her if he refuses. Frank is forced to wear a bracelet that's rigged to explode should he wander too far from his car, meaning he and Valentina have to get closer than expected and inevitably fall in love. The irrelevant plot merely serves to showcase the typically outrageous, gravity-defying stunts - cars skidding atop speeding trains - and provide excuses for the ultra-fit Statham to get his kit off - the hilarious strip-fight. But while the "flash, bang, wallop" stuff once used to be fun, this is just boring and more brainless than ever. | Director: Olivier Megaton Cast List: Frank Martin : Jason Statham Valentina : Natalya Rudakova Tarconi : François Berléand Johnson : Robert Knepper Leonid Vasilev : Jeroen Krabbé Leonid's aide : Alex Kobold Malcom Manville : David Atrakchi Flag : Yann Sundberg Ice : Eriq Ebouaney Leonid's secretary : Katia Tchenko |
