It's rare for a remake to match the standard of a much lauded original, but this update of John Frankenheimer's classic 1962 psychological thriller comes pretty close. An intelligent and chillingly believable tale of brainwashing, exploitation and political corruption, it relocates the military conflict at the heart of the story from Communist Korea to the first Gulf War in Kuwait. Denzel Washington steps into Frank Sinatra's shoes, playing a tormented US Army major who unwittingly becomes the key to a complex political conspiracy. As with his Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs, Jonathan Demme's controlled direction is exhilarating, and he elicits brilliant performances from a fine cast. Liev Schreiber finally gets a part to sink his teeth into, as Washington's former sergeant who becomes a vice presidential candidate, but it's Meryl Streep, as Schreiber's unscrupulous senator mother, who leaves the deepest impression. |

Gigantic, genetically modified piranha chomp their way down Venezuela's Orinoco River in another deliberately over-the-top creature feature from the company that brought you Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus. As diplomats and even helicopters fall victim to the rapidly growing eating machines, it's up to a female scientist (1980s pop star Tiffany) and a special agent (Paul Logan) to try to prevent them reaching Florida. While the ultra-earnest leads compete for the title of "most hammy performance", a brainless script and ludicrously un-special effects recall the worst excesses of 1950s B-movies. With realism entirely absent, the mutant fish look particularly ridiculous, consequently swinging between giggle inducing and totally derisible. Nonetheless, writer/director Eric Forsberg revels in the film's absurdities, delivering the frantic events with a mock seriousness that heightens the cheap fun. Those who follow the "so bad it's good" school of thought will probably love it - anyone else should avoid. |

Critics and film-makers are always being asked to reel off their desert island films: this, without question, is one such great. Director Martin Scorsese makes no concession to character likeability here as he charts Jake La Motta's downward slide from arrogant prizefighter to frustrated, hateful dropout. Robert De Niro, who piled on the pounds to play the latter-day La Motta, proves he is the ultimate Method actor, both utterly convincing in the ring (the brutal fight sequences are spectacularly staged) and as the empty barrel abusing everyone (including his wife, Cathy Moriarty, and brother, Joe Pesci) at home. Scorsese effortlessly fuses top-drawer acting (De Niro rightly won a best actor Oscar for his efforts), pumping narrative drive and blitzkrieg camera technique to deliver a giddy, claustrophobic classic. |
