This historical drama from director Mike Barker begins as the English Civil War ends, focusing on the relationship between the Parliamentarians' brilliant military commander, Thomas Fairfax (Dougray Scott), and his deputy, Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth). An aristocrat by birth, Fairfax finds himself torn between Cromwell and his wife, Lady Anne Fairfax (Olivia Williams). The former seems determined to accept nothing less than the head of King Charles I, the latter refuses to abandon old friends and standards. Despite woefully stilted dialogue, this is a fascinating if controversial history lesson - the King's blood is shown to be literally on Cromwell's hands. Although the role is little more than an extended cameo, Charles (Rupert Everett) dominates the story, strutting around with the haughtiness of one who believes himself chosen by God - even in captivity - and towering over the diminutive upstart Cromwell. Alongside characters as powerful as these, Scott's Fairfax seems so bland in comparison. | Director: Mike Barker Cast List: Oliver Cromwell : Tim Roth Thomas Fairfax : Dougray Scott King Charles I : Rupert Everett Lady Anne Fairfax : Olivia Williams Denzil Holles, Speaker of the House : James Bolam Lord De Vere, Lady Anne's father : Corin Redgrave Mrs Cromwell : Patricia Kerrigan |

Nuance was not Donald Wolfit's strong suit, but he had presence and power in spades. He totally dominates this story with a bluster and conviction that keeps an uninspiring tale of the hunt for a Second World War traitor from falling flat on its face. As he showed in Operation Amsterdam, writer/director Michael McCarthy had a splendid sense of place, but no talent whatsoever for generating and sustaining suspense. It was a smart move casting Wolfit, Christopher Lee and Anton Diffring as a trio of shifty-looking suspects, but it all too quickly becomes clear in which direction the finger is pointing. | Director: Michael McCarthy Cast List: Colonel Price : Donald Wolfit Major Shane : Robert Bray Vicki Toller : Jane Griffiths Professor Toller : Carl Jaffe Joseph Brezzini : Anton Diffring Thomas Rilke : Oscar Quitak Clinton : Rupert Davies Lt Grant : John Van Eyssen TBC : Christopher Lee |

Director Jack Lee's documentary background is evident in this earnest adaptation of Nevil Shute's celebrated wartime novel about the hardships faced by a group of women route-marched across Malaya by the invading Japanese. While he has little difficulty setting his scene, he struggles to prevent some episodes in the rather underwhelming script from lapsing into overwrought melodrama. The cast members keep their heads above water, with Takagi (as a sympathetic guard), Jean Anderson - later one of the stars of the BBC TV PoW drama Tenko - and Renee Houston offering stout support to Virginia McKenna, whose romantic interludes with Peter Finch provide some charming relief from the trials of the trek. | Director: Jack Lee Cast List: Jean Paget : Virginia McKenna Joe Harman : Peter Finch Japanese sergeant : Takagi Captain Sugaya : Tran Van Khe Miss Horsefall : Jean Anderson Mrs Dudley Frost : Marie Lohr Ellen : Maureen Swanson Ebbey : Renee Houston Mrs Frith : Nora Nicholson Mr Holland : John Fabian Ben : Vincent Ball |

Big John Wayne finally won peer group recognition, taking the best actor Oscar for his performance in this western as Reuben J "Rooster" Cogburn, a cantankerous, one-eyed, drunken old reprobate hired by Mattie Ross (the excellent Kim Darby) to avenge her father's death at the hands of thoroughly nasty Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey). This movie has acquired a reputation for being a rollicking fun western, but actually it is surprisingly violent for a Wayne film (a pit of rattlesnakes, Dennis Hopper's fingers being severed), and, with its finely hewn, semi-Biblical dialogue (by Marguerite Roberts from Charles Portis's marvellous novel), it's not - unlike Wayne's earlier westerns - really suitable for family viewing, despite its strong moral theme. Glen Campbell is ineffective as Texas Ranger La Boeuf - a role first offered to Elvis Presley, to whom Wayne wouldn't take second billing - but it doesn't really matter. It's still a beautifully photographed film of many memorable moments, not least of which is Cogburn's final shoot-out with the bad guys in a Colorado clearing. | Director: Henry Hathaway Cast List: Reuben J "Rooster" Cogburn : John Wayne La Boeuf : Glen Campbell Mattie Ross : Kim Darby Tom Chaney : Jeff Corey Ned Pepper : Robert Duvall Emmett Quincy : Jeremy Slate Moon : Dennis Hopper Goudy : Alfred Ryder Colonel G Stonehill : Strother Martin Captain Boots Finch : Ron Soble Lawyer J Noble Daggett : John Fiedler Judge Parker : James Westerfield Sheriff : John Doucette |

The magic is still there but the mood remains resolutely dark in this engrossing fifth episode in the fantasy franchise. With no Quidditch matches or tournaments to divert him, the task facing Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is to convince the wizarding community of the re-emergence of Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). His cause isn't helped when Dumbledore's position as Head of Hogwarts comes under threat. Adapting JK Rowling's bumper-size book was always going to be a challenge, and it's therefore surprising that David Yates's film is the shortest to date. Less may not necessarily be more, however, as some characters are given short shrift and subplots are sketched over. That said, Yates instils proceedings with the requisite sense of wonder, Alan Rickman is deliciously dour as Snape and Rupert Grint's Ron injects some much needed light relief, while Imelda Staunton steals the show as prim but poisonous tutor Dolores Umbridge. In a spellbinding finale set in the Ministry of Magic, we finally see the forces of good and evil engaging in full-on combat, and it's well worth the wait. | Director: David Yates Cast List: Harry Potter : Daniel Radcliffe Ron Weasley : Rupert Grint Hermione Granger : Emma Watson Sirius Black : Gary Oldman Prof Albus Dumbledore : Michael Gambon Lord Voldemort : Ralph Fiennes Dolores Umbridge : Imelda Staunton Prof Severus Snape : Alan Rickman Luna Lovegood : Evanna Lynch Cho Chang : Katie Leung Bellatrix Lestrange : Helena Bonham Carter Rubeus Hagrid : Robbie Coltrane Mrs Molly Weasley : Julie Walters Mr Arthur Weasley : Mark Williams Prof Sybill Trelawney : Emma Thompson Prof Minerva McGonagall : Maggie Smith Remus Lupin : David Thewlis Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody : Brendan Gleeson Cornelius Fudge : Robert Hardy Lucius Malfoy : Jason Isaacs Draco Malfoy : Tom Felton Argus Filch : David Bradley (2) Filius Flitwick : Warwick Davis Uncle Vernon : Richard Griffiths Aunt Petunia : Fiona Shaw |

This jaw-dropping disaster movie makes director Roland Emmerich's previous outings feel like expensive dress rehearsals. For all their epic destruction, his previous features Independence Day and the lacklustre Godzilla are damp squibs compared to this astonishing, cautionary tale. Rooted loosely in scientific reality, the film piles on the Hollywood excess to deliver a US-centred thrill-ride in which global warming abruptly pushes the planet into a new ice age during one incredible worldwide superstorm. Though there's a human element, focusing on climatologist Dennis Quaid's cross-country journey to Manhattan to rescue his trapped son, Jake Gyllenhaal, it's the weather effects that take centre stage. Putting aside the anticlimactic conclusion, this is cinema as pure spectacle, as tornados, flash floods, hurricanes and snow demolish cities including LA and New York. Never mind that the dialogue is frequently laugh-out-loud cheesy and the performances are often melodramatic, what counts here is the enormous entertainment factor. | Director: Roland Emmerich Cast List: Professor Jack Hall : Dennis Quaid Sam Hall : Jake Gyllenhaal Professor Terry Rapson : Ian Holm Laura Chapman : Emmy Rossum Doctor Lucy Hall : Sela Ward Jason Evans : Dash Mihok Frank Harris : Jay O Sanders JD : Austin Nichols Brian Parks : Arjay Smith Janet Tokada : Tamlyn Tomita Luther : Glenn Plummer Simon : Adrian Lester Vice President Becker : Kenneth Welsh President Blake : Perry King Judith : Sheila McCarthy Gomez : Nester Serrano |

Despite returning to Las Vegas where the series began, Steven Soderbergh's second sequel to 2001's Ocean's Eleven fails to rediscover the sheer insouciance of the original. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and the rest of the cast reprise their roles as the charming conmen, who this time target the hi-tech casino of ruthless Vegas businessman Willy Bank (Al Pacino). The strength of the series was always its breezy enthusiasm, but here there's a chronic lack of fun: Pacino barely gets out of first gear, while Clooney seems to have his mind on other things. Only Ellen Barkin appears to be enjoying herself, shining in a comic role that sees her dosed with potent pheromones and seduced by a heavily disguised Matt Damon. Apparently there won't be an "Ocean's Fourteen"; clearly, Soderbergh's under no illusions that Ocean's winning streak has dried up at last. | Director: Steven Soderbergh Cast List: Danny Ocean : George Clooney Rusty Ryan : Brad Pitt Linus Caldwell / Lenny Pepperidge : Matt Damon Terry Benedict : Andy Garcia Basher Tarr : Don Cheadle Frank Catton : Bernie Mac Abigail Sponder : Ellen Barkin Willy Bank : Al Pacino Virgil Malloy : Casey Affleck Turk Malloy : Scott Caan Livingston Dell : Eddie Jemison Yen : Qin Shaobo Saul Bloom : Carl Reiner Reuben Tishkoff : Elliott Gould Roman Nagel : Eddie Izzard The VUP : David Paymer Greco Montgomery : Julian Sands François Toulour : Vincent Cassel |
