More commercial than her debut film Go Fish, Rose Troche's second feature is an intelligent and funny examination of 1990s sexuality. Kevin McKidd plays a quiet homosexual who starts exploring his masculinity in an overly serious men's group. There he meets James Purefoy and, embarking on a relationship with him, is distraught to discover Purefoy is the boyfriend of his first love and good friend Jennifer Ehle. And all on the eve of his 30th birthday party. It's an extremely funny and perceptive film, impressive in its open attitude, where sexuality is not as important as essential humanity.
