Overview:
Based on a story by M Night Shyamalan, this passable chiller is the first movie in the proposed Night Chronicles trilogy - supernatural stories set in the modern urban world. Here, five strangers find themselves trapped in a lift in a Philadelphia office building. So far, so claustrophobic. But it soon emerges (thanks to a Mexican security guard who knows his folklore) that the Devil is also among them and wants to claim their souls. What's intriguing here is that the subsequent meltdown of the quivering quintet (and the eerie stuff that ensues) is observed via CCTV by a sceptical investigating cop (Chris Messina). True, it's all a bit Twilight Zone and is spooky rather than gory, but the cinematography by Tak Fujimoto (The Silence of the Lambs) is effective, especially the disorientating opening credits sequence, and it's competently put together by director John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine) and screenwriter Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night). And at least Shyamalan, whose career behind the camera has followed the law of diminishing returns since the huge success of The Sixth Sense, didn't direct it.
