Darkly comic and evocative of Edgar Allan Poe in the dementia and claustrophobia departments, Mario Bava's elegant shocker stars Italian 1960s staple Stephen Forsyth as a bridal gown salon owner driven to murdering his models on their wedding nights. It's when he starts wearing white veils himself to kill his wife (Laura Betti, acclaimed for her role in the Pier Paolo Pasolini film Theorem) that the real twisted trouble begins. Each psychedelic murder reveals clues to the trauma that created his psychosis. Revealing the killer's identity from the outset is unusual for the giallo (Italian thriller) genre, but Bava's ironic chiller pushes rich visual delirium to both macabre and mischievous limits.
