Vijay Anand attempted to give Bollywood some Bond-like glamour and excitement with this convoluted crime thriller, though the end result is more Austin Powers than 007. There are false walls, mistaken identities and moments of high-rise peril that could have come from a 1930s serial, but the trendy costumes and exotic locations made it an instant cult favourite back in the late 1960s. The byplay between Dev Anand (as the cop's son falsely accused of being a cracksman), femme fatale Vyjayanthimala and her scheming brother, Ashok Kumar, is so unselfconsciously overblown that this makes for irresistibly kitsch entertainment.

Vinay finds himself constantly mistaken for a look-alike jewel thief. To clear his name, he joins hands with the police to impersonate the thief and catch the real culprit. When the thief decides to counter by posing as Vinay, their true identities become thoroughly muddled.
