Overview:
This warm and wonderful animated fantasy sees Disney continue to move with the times. An innovative and quirky mix of comedy, family drama and fast-paced action, it's as lush and lovely as its Hawaiian setting. Accompanied by a foot-tapping Elvis Presley soundtrack, the film pushes a message of multicultural equality and tolerance so all-encompassing that it even embraces extraterrestrials. In the process, it turns lonely youngster Lilo's friendship with cute but naughty alien fugitive Stitch into a candy-coloured morality tale. The importance of "Ohana" (family) and the unconditional love and loyalty that accompany it are hammered home continually. Yet, whether it's Lilo's older sister fighting to keep her sibling out of care, or badly behaved Stitch learning the values of a tidy bedroom, the life lessons are sweet and easy to swallow. The only weak points are the thankfully short intergalactic sequences, in which the austere surroundings and creatures appear lifeless in comparison to the vivid characters and gentle watercolour backgrounds of planet Earth.
