What's this - a cheery cannibal comedy? Inspired by the tragic Donner Pass disaster of 1846-7, the film stars Robert Carlyle as a devious maneater who decimates the inhabitants of a mountain outpost to keep human flesh on his winter menu. Containing as many surprises as Scream and all the hilarity of Austin Powers, Bird's highly disturbing and thought-provoking film features a couple of impeccable performances. Carlyle etches the strongest portrait of pure evil since Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, while Guy Pearce is equally brilliant as the army captain who tries to stop Carlyle's bloodthirsty exploits before he becomes addicted to the same diet. The insane climax is yet another off-kilter delight in this intensely hilarious chiller.

Upon receiving reports of missing persons at Fort Spencer, a remote Army outpost on the Western frontier, Capt. John Boyd investigates. After arriving at his new post, Boyd and his regiment aid a wounded frontiersman who recounts a horrifying tale of a wagon train murdered by its supposed guide -- a vicious U.S. Army colonel gone rogue. Fearing the worst, the regiment heads out into the wilderness to verify the gruesome claims.
