Another in the long line of torpid chillers from producer Charles Band whose production company Full Moon was responsible for off-loading hosts of horror cheapies on the straight-to-video market in the 1980s. Good vampire Michael Watson seeks to inherit a Transylvanian bloodstone's powers but his evil brother Anders Hove wins the battle to put the bite on his former co-ed classmates from America who are visiting Romania. Stop-motion demons (by veteran special effects whizz David Allen) spring from three severed fingers, Angus (Phantasm) Scrimm cameos as be-wigged King Vlad and Nosferatu is shamelessly ripped-off by director Ted Nicolau in the misbegotten effort to give some genre credence to the relentlessly drab proceedings. Three equally feeble sequels followed: the shot back-to-back Bloodstone: Subspecies II and Bloodlust: Subspecies III, and Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm.
