The history of television comedy transferring to the cinema is one littered with dismal failures (see George and Mildred, Are You Being Served?, and, gulp, Bless This House). So fans of the twisted world of Royston Vasey and its alarming inhabitants should be anxious about this feature-length spin-off. Happily, the sketch-show style of the programme means that the screenplay can concentrate on gags rather than character development. The plot itself is all but impossible to describe - suffice to say a trio of (fictional) characters break through into the real world to confront the show's writers - and although many of the series regulars get a look in, it foregrounds some of the lesser explored characters: butcher Hilary Briss, salesman Geoff Tipps and pederast German Herr Lipp. It's unlikely to win over any new converts, but fans will no doubt revel in an hour and a half of its gleeful weirdness.

The fictional world of Royston Vasey is facing apocalypse and the only way to avert disaster is for our nightmarish cast of characters to find a way into the real world and confront their creators. From present day Soho to the fictional film world of 17th Century Britain, the residents must overcome countless bizarre obstacles in their bid to return Royston Vasey to safety.
