"Six reasons why the west was wild."
- Director: Christopher Cain
- Genre: Western, Crime, Action, Adventure, Drama
- Studio: Morgan Creek Entertainment
- Subtitled | Duration: 120 Mins
Overview:
Emilio Estevez plays Billy the Kid and is joined by a good proportion of the 1980s Brat Pack in this attempt to breathe new life into the western. The movie's casual violence, breakneck pace and relentless hard-rock score offended purists, though at 26, Estevez was closer in age to the real Billy (who died aged 22) than most previous actors. In The Left Handed Gun, Paul Newman played the Kid as a Freudian case study, and in Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Kris Kristofferson portrayed him as a sort of free-spirited, Vietnam draft dodger. Here, Estevez's Billy is a social bandit, a Robin Hood figure, in a film that also pays much attention to the look, broad racial mix and eccentric characters of the Old West. It's a western that shows both box-office calculation and respect for American history.
